Agriculture: Our source of food

Since ages, agriculture has played a key role in our evolution and economy. Today we consider it normal to have food on our plate without even thinking about the labour done to get it there. That labour will grow even more since climate change and water shortage will put more pressure on farmers. Restoring the environment and more space for people to live will decrease the amount of land for agriculture. So, the farmers will have to grow more food in less space in harsher conditions.

Europe must be able to feed its own people so that it does not have to rely on other nations. First, if disaster strikes and food-supplies worldwide are low, we can reduce the impact and avoid starvation. Secondly, what is grown in the European Union, is controlled by the European Union. We have excellent food agencies that control food from the start till almost upon your plate. To keep up this work, controllers need to know where the food is grown to perform inspections.

Farmers need our help, need support to do their job, and be given the land they need to do it. They need a fair price for their products, so they know what they are working for. Making all that effort for a whole year and then hardly any financial return, will not help our primary economical sector. In the heat of summer, our farmers need access to water for the animals and the vegetables, fruits and grain growing in the fields. We will use modern techniques to purify water and provide it to farmers so that they can irrigate their fields and keep the fresh water for the animals.

We need farmers; they are at the core of our food supply. And healthy food is what we want. A farmer is thus responsible for the quality and the safety of the food that he/she produces, the land he/she uses, and the pollution that is created on that land using chemicals.

We need to rethink the way land is distributed now and make it more sustainable for the farmers and our food, for the environment and nature, for us and generations to come.
